Memorial Chapel is a mass masonry structure featuring Gothic-style, steeply sloped slate roofing; facades of Wissahickon schist, Indiana limestone, and granite; stained-glass windows; and wood doors. Constructed in 1905, the Chapel was evaluated by Gale through a detailed hands-on survey, exploratory probes, and non-destructive evaluation methods.

The evaluation focused on determining masonry wall composition, construction, and existing conditions, while also assessing the potential rehabilitation of the natural slate roofing, stone facades, foundation waterproofing, and select structural framing systems. Multiple wall section types, configurations, thicknesses, and conditions were identified during the assessment, including both rubble infill and coursed masonry at interior backup walls.

The evaluation significantly reduced the number of unknown conditions and informed the development of baseline repair options for the building enclosure and structural systems. Multiple wall section types were identified, including varying configurations, thicknesses, and conditions. All repair recommendations were developed in accordance with The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties—Standards for Rehabilitation, ensuring a sensitive and appropriate approach to preserving the Chapel’s historic character.
