Mahan Hall, Building 3
Slate Roof Replacement
The historic Mahan Hall building’s slate roofing was beyond its serviceable life. The roof was experiencing interior leaks beneath existing skylights and laylights, snow and ice accumulation at roof crickets, inadequate controls to prevent slate sliding, limited roof access, and a deteriorated cementitious roof deck.
Gale teamed with CCI under a Design-Build procurement to conduct an evaluation and observe destructive testing to verify, update, and supplement the 30% baseline design documents prepared by others for replacement and repairs. The new slate roof design included installation of new solid wood decking and sleeper supports; new underlayments and slate roofing; new sheet metal roofing and flashings; repairs to three (3) existing skylights; widened pinch points at copper roof crickets; new snow retention pads and rails; replacement of existing roof scuttles; one (1) new roof access opening; and new fall restraint railings and anchors. Gale prepared construction observation reports documenting defective work, tracked field changes for as-built drawings, and punch list reviews.
