Gale led the evaluation, design and construction-phase services for the comprehensive historic restoration of the Barnstable Superior Courthouse’s building enclosure to preserve the building’s historic character and appearance while enhancing its long-term durability and overall thermal performance. The scope includes restoration, repair and/or replacement of exterior granite, mortar, cast stone, wood columns, cornice, windows, and trim, as well as structural repairs to the brick arches in the basement. Construction scheduled to begin in the summer of 2026.
Constructed in 1831, the courthouse is a Greek Revival architectural style listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has served as the seat of justice on Cape Cod for nearly 200 years. The two-story structure underwent five renovations between 1879 and 1971 and features a gable roof with an eight-column wood cupola and a Greek Doric portico with fluted columns supporting a triangular pediment facing the street. The exterior walls are constructed of rock-faced Quincy granite with honed Quincy granite used for the corner pilasters. The cornice, entablature, pediment, and columns were constructed of wood with a sanded paint system to mimic granite.
