Historic Masonry Restoration and Window Replacement

The Bakersville School began around 1884 as a two-story, four-room schoolhouse. It was expanded in 1918 to three floors and 16 rooms, with additional renovations completed in 1990 and 2003. The historic building experienced leaks and interior deterioration caused by moisture infiltration through defects in the masonry walls and window systems. The 30-year-old windows were also thermally inefficient, contributing to excessive interior heat gain. A distinctive feature of the building’s façade is its 1-inch-wide mortar joints, originally incorporated as an aesthetic element. Gale’s enclosure evaluation and renovation resulted in many upgrades.

Gale’s renovation included repointing the mortar joints and repairing the damaged stone and brick units, installing new through wall flashings, rebuilding the masonry parapet to improve structural integrity and mitigate leaks at the top floor, and installing new historic replica thermally broken aluminum windows. Window units were design to replicate the original wood framed double hung style windows. Panning was used to replicate the original brick molds and decorative trim.
