The JFK Memorial Coliseum is a one-story barrel-vaulted structure constructed in 1965. The building features cast-in-place concrete, structural steel framing, a cementitious wood fiber roof deck, and heavy timber arches that extend through the masonry walls and anchor to exterior-mounted concrete piers. The existing roof system, installed in 1991, consisted of an elastomeric membrane and insulation over the original roof deck.

Gale provided building enclosure and structural engineering services for the replacement and repair of the barrel-vault roof and adjacent ancillary roof areas. Due to the unique geometry of the structure, the design incorporated specialized structural considerations to satisfy wind uplift requirements. Because the facility houses an ice rink, Gale also evaluated temperature and humidity conditions to coordinate air and vapor barrier placement and reduce the potential for interior condensation.
