The colleges’ existing tennis facility and track were visibly in poor condition. The courts exhibited several concerns from the failing bituminous pavement, significant cracking, and planarity and draining issues, to inadequate lighting and lack of accessibility. The track experienced similar cracking and planarity issues and much of the surfacing had deteriorated. Gale provided civil and structural engineering services for a design-build upgrade of the courts and reconstruction of the track. Eight post-tension concrete tennis courts were built to replace the existing courts featuring new lighting, fencing, accessible walkways, and drainage and aesthetic improvements. Specified track improvements included pavement milling and leveling surface requirements and newly installed trench drains and track surfacing. The Springfield College track won the ASBA Outstanding Outdoor Tennis Facility of the Year Award.
