Gale’s History

Charlie Gale
Charlie Gale, Gale’s Founder

For over 60 years, Gale has grown with purpose, guided by visionary leadership, technical diversification, and an unwavering commitment to our clients across the East Coast and beyond. From a modest beginning to a multi-regional presence, our journey has been defined by strategic expansion and an entrepreneurial culture. How we got to where we are today:

Gale launched its Roof Division in the 1970s

In 1964, Charlie and Carolyn Gale founded Gale Engineering in Braintree, Massachusetts, providing civil engineering and surveying services out of a triple-decker house. Their passion and integrity laid the foundation for a firm built on trust and client loyalty. The 1970s marked a pivotal shift as Gale launched its Roofing Division, broadening its services to include roof design, evaluation, and consulting. This move foreshadowed Gale’s future leadership in building enclosure expertise. As the company grew, adding disciplines and staff, it moved to a renovated historic schoolhouse in Weymouth, Massachusetts in 1984.

New Regions & Leadership 1980s–1990s

Umass Lowell

Gale expanded into the Mid-Atlantic with an office in Maryland, strengthening our building enclosure consulting capabilities and reinforcing our reputation as a trusted expert in the field. To support continued East Coast growth, we later opened a Florida office to extend our reach into the Southeast. Founder Charlie Gale retired in 1993, passing the torch to Harold Flight. By the late 1990s, Jon Lindberg and Edward Madden joined as partners, setting the stage for expanded ownership. During this time, Gale launched its Athletic Facilities Planning and Design Group—designing New England’s first synthetic “infill” field at UMass Lowell.

Continued Diversification & Growth 2000s–2010s

The millennium marked a period of strategic growth. The firm introduced the Airport Engineering and Planning Group to enhance and diversify its client base in New England and expanded its presence with new offices in New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Virginia. The decade saw building enclosure systems grow increasingly complex as the science behind materials advanced. With a rising need to verify that these systems were properly detailed and constructed to meet performance requirements, Gale expanded its Building Enclosure Consulting practice by adding Building Enclosure Commissioning capabilities to address this demand for improved building performance. During this time, the Structural Engineering Group was formed to support all of Gale’s disciplines. Gale’s ownership continued to grow with eight partners reinforcing its leadership and technical depth. Upon Edward Madden’s retirement, Jon Lindberg assumed full corporate responsibility, leading Gale as it surpassed 100 employees and proudly celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Industry Leaders 2020s–Today
